Discuss and Opinion Essay on Retirement

Some people think that one should retire at the age of 65, whilst others say that people should be allowed to work for as long as they want to. Discuss all sides of the argument and give your opinion?

Retirement age is a hot topic of debate in a number of countries, and two major influencing factors are the economy, and the societal structure of the nation. Different people have distinct point of views regarding this increasing issue of concern. Where some people are in favour of limiting the retirement age to 60 or 65, others believe there should be no boundaries or restrictions on giving up work. In this essay, there will be a discussion on both sides of the contention before deducing an even-handed conclusion. One side of the argument relates to the physical requirements of some jobs, suggesting that people over the age of 65 may not be able to undertake roles such as building labourers.  Whilst it is true that age brings declining physical strength, few jobs in Australia however now require a lot of physical abilities, other than jobs requiring hard labour.  Nonetheless, many farmers and people owning their own traditional business continue to work well into their later years. In this present era, every company demands maximum value for money invested in employees. Hence another idea in support of this point of view is the benefits that senior citizens get after the retrial. People can spend more time on the things they always wanted to do.

Another issue to be canvassed is whether or not early retirement of people leaving the workforce at, say, 65, would provide greater employment opportunities for young people joining the workforce. One side of the argument relates to the physical requirements of some jobs, suggesting that people

In spite of the decline physical abilities, there are numerous areas where no retirement age policy can be considered as boon. Expertise and rich work experience could be principal assets for the employee that he/she may be able to contribute to the employer’s progress in terms of business growth. Proficiency skills and capability to solve any obstruction or to manage frequent odd situations cannot be made parallel with younger skilled employees. Many renowned scientists like Alfred Einstein and Abdul Kalam demonstrated their expertise in later ages.

In a nutshell, acquired knowledge and experience do not significantly deteriorate with age. As long as a person is competent and has the will to contribute, then age should not be a barrier. Youth may have its power, but age has expertise.
